Cottages in Grasmere
Famous for the ‘Lion and the Lamb’ and resting place of Britain’s most famous poet William Wordsworth, Grasmere is a real gem.
This traditional lakeland village is situated on the banks of the river Rothay which flows into the lovely Grasmere Lake which is only a short walk away. Rowing boats can be hired between March and November for paddling about on the lake. Grasmere is overlooked by the ‘Lion and the Lamb', a rocky outcrop that sits at the summit of Helm Crag. If you look at the fell from the other side, it is said to resemble an old lady at a piano. Whichever way you go, there are delightful views in every direction and many walks to explore.
In the words of William Wordsworth, Grasmere is ‘the loveliest spot that man hath ever found’. He loved the village and surrounding area so much that he lived here for fourteen years. His home, Dove Cottage is found at the edge of the village and has been converted into an award winning museum with rooms set up as the family would have lived in them and knowledgeable guides to give you a tour. Wordsworth and his family are all buried in St Oswald’s Church which dates back to the 13th Century. Beside the church is the Wordsworth daffodil garden where you can have a stone engraved and set into the path.
Close to the church is the former village school which dates from 1630. This is now famous as Sarah Nelson’s gingerbread shop. Queues snake out of the door in high season with visitors eager to try the celebrated gingerbread which is neither cake nor biscuit but distinctly chewy and original.
In fact, the village is one of the Lake District’s most popular spots with many gift shops, including the very popular Herdy range and plenty of places to eat. August sees the historic rushbearing festival where the earth floor of the church used to be strewn with fragrant new rushes for warmth and hygiene. These days the floor is flagged, but children still process rushes through the village once a year. Grasmere sports day is also worth visiting in late August to see traditional sports such as Westmorland wrestling and fell running.
Grasmere makes a perfect centre for a delightful holiday in the Lake District, with variety and spectacular scenery on your doorstep.
